A desert walk, not a mountain hike
Al Qudra Lakes and the nearby dunes are one of my favourite spots for a weekend hike. It is not really a hike; it is more likely a walk in the desert through dunes. It is a weekend destination for families, couples and friends.
This one is for beginner campers who still want the sight of Dubai’s skyline in the background so they do not feel too homesick. It is not too far—just about an hour’s drive from Dubai—and for that reason it has become a very popular weekend destination for Dubai families. Crowds are usual at weekends, especially in the evening.
The area is huge, with plenty of space for everyone to pitch a tent. It is also home to free-roaming wildlife and beautifully quaint lakes. The best experience is usually a simple one: take in the scenery, walk the dunes gently and give yourself time to relax.

First stop at Al Qudra
This will be the first pit stop on your route to Al Qudra. Around the Last Exit area, you can find a gas station, food caravans, restaurants, mini supermarkets, cafeterias, washrooms, cycle rentals and other shops. It is the best place to stop before heading to Al Qudra parks, and it is the place to refuel, stock firewood and charcoal, buy supplies and use a proper restroom.
Al Qudra camping areas
Some areas are farther from the animals and ponds and feel more suitable for camping. You will see groups camping here and there. If you are travelling with a large group and planning a barbecue evening, choose a designated camping area and follow Dubai Municipality instructions carefully. Rules and access can change, and fines may apply if you break them.
Forget the 4x4s and extreme-sport equipment: this is an oasis best spent taking in the scenery. You’ll find a camping area at Al Qudra Lakes East, where you can pitch a tent and officially become a camper of Dubai. For a more romantic camping trip, you may want to set up near Al Qudra’s Love Lakes, next to The Last Lake of Al Qudra. Signs around the lakes point toward the spot.
What to bring for camping
- Fire pan.
- Firewood and charcoal.
- Barbecue pan; barbecue meat and vegetables.
- Knife, spoon, glasses, plates and forks.
- Tissue paper.
- Snacks, food and drinks.
- Drinking water and washing water.
- Waste-disposal bags.
- Folding table and chairs.
- Floor mats.
- Tents and sleeping bags.
- Lighting setup.
- Binoculars—the handiest extra item for observing the many bird species and desert plants around the lakes.
Al Qudra cycling
Those who fancy a good workout can take their bikes around Al Qudra Cycle Track, spanning 86 km and including a 50 km loop—just in case you are afraid of venturing too far. You can also rent a bike. There is a cycle shop at Last Exit, and they provide maintenance as well.
Al Qudra evening drive-through and photoshoot
This is one of the best options if you are with family; children will probably love it. You do not need a 4x4 vehicle for off-roading. You can have a good one-hour drive with loved ones through the unpaved Al Qudra Lakes roads from the Last Exit side to Love Lake. Stop at Love Lake and spend some time there.
The Al Qudra Lakes East side is a useful starting point. Set Love Lake or your chosen lake area as the destination in Google Maps, then expect roughly an hour travelling on unpaved road. It is generally suitable for sedan cars, but drive carefully around corners, obey all speed limits and never leave established tracks.

Respect the rules, wildlife and roads
Follow Dubai Municipality instructions, as authorities work hard to keep the area clean and enjoyable. Do not litter; dispose of rubbish only in designated areas. Speed limits are enforced on unpaved roads, and deer, rabbits and birds can cross in front of vehicles, so drive vigilantly and slowly.
Remember: no fire on the ground and no trash on the ground, or you may be fined. Use a suitable fire pan only where fires are permitted, keep noise reasonable, protect the wildlife and confirm current camping, barbecue and access rules before leaving home.
