Climbing harness

The climbing harness is the linchpin of your safety system. It keeps you attached to the rope and anchors, distributing your weight and absorbing shock during falls. Modern harnesses are designed for comfort, durability and versatility, allowing you to focus on climbing rather than discomfort.

  • Types: There are various harness types, including sit harnesses for traditional climbing and full-body harnesses for mountaineering and big-wall climbing.
  • Adjustability: Look for harnesses with adjustable leg loops and waistbands for a secure, comfortable fit.

Climbing rope

Your lifeline to the earth, the climbing rope is one of your most crucial pieces of equipment. Climbing ropes are dynamic: they are designed to stretch and absorb the energy of a fall, helping minimise the impact on both climber and gear.

  • Types: Ropes come in single, half and twin categories, each suited to different styles of climbing. Single ropes are most commonly used for general climbing.
  • Diameter: Ropes range from thin (8.9 mm to 9.4 mm) for lightweight performance to thicker (10 mm to 11 mm) for durability and easier handling.
  • Length: Confirm the required length before purchase. Extra length adds weight, but may be useful for the routes you climb.

Carabiners

Carabiners are the link between your harness, protection such as cams and nuts, and the rope. They come in different shapes and sizes, each designed for particular uses.

  • Types: Keylock carabiners help prevent snagging and are often used for clipping bolts, while wiregate carabiners are lightweight and less prone to icing.
  • Locking mechanisms: Locking carabiners are essential for securing critical connections. Auto-locking and screw-locking carabiners are popular options.

Climbing protection

Climbing protection—including cams, nuts and slings—creates anchor points on the rock and helps protect against falls. These pieces are placed into cracks and crevices, so their strength, condition and correct placement are paramount.

  • Camming devices: Spring-loaded devices that expand when placed in cracks, available in a range of sizes for different crack widths. Do not use them without proper training.
  • Nuts (stoppers): Passive protection pieces wedged into rock constrictions; they are versatile and essential components of many climbers’ racks.
  • Slings: Used to extend protection, reduce rope drag and create anchor systems. Dyneema slings are lightweight and strong.

Climbing shoes

Your feet are your main point of contact with the rock, so selecting the right climbing shoes is crucial. Shoes come in different shapes and styles for different types of climbing.

  • Fit: Climbing shoes should fit snugly, with toes touching the front without painful pressure. Proper fit is essential for precise footwork.
  • Types: Choose between neutral, moderate and aggressive shoes according to your climbing style and goals.

Helmet

Protecting your head from falling debris and potential impacts is non-negotiable. Climbing helmets are designed to absorb shock and disperse impact energy.

  • Types: The two main types are hardshell and foam. Hardshell helmets are durable, while foam helmets are lightweight.
  • Fit: Ensure a snug, comfortable fit with adjustable straps that keep the helmet securely in place.
