Mountain wadi landscape in Fujairah
Wadi Al Dahir offers a greener side of the Hajar Mountains, shaped by freshwater and rugged geology.

The UAE is known for cities and deserts, but Wadi Al Dahir—also called the Sulphur Pools—offers a lesser-known natural escape in Fujairah. This hike combines dramatic mountain terrain, greenery and turquoise mineral pools for a memorable outdoor day.

Location and accessibility

Wadi Al Dahir is in Fujairah, around 30 km from the city centre near the village of Al Dahir in the Hajar Mountain foothills. It can be reached by paved roads from Fujairah, Dibba and Ras Al Khaimah, with parking near the starting point. The location is commonly labelled “Fujairah Adventures Al Dahir Hiking Trail” on maps.

The drive from Dubai is commonly estimated at about two hours. Taxis or ride-hailing services may be possible, but because the area is remote, arrange a return pickup in advance. Public transport is limited.

The trail experience

The Wadi Al Dahir route is described as an 8.4 km loop taking roughly five hours. It is moderately challenging, with gradual ascents and descents plus loose-rock and uneven-terrain sections that require careful footing. The trail passes palm groves, banana plantations and small farmlands, contrasting with the rocky Hajar Mountains around it.

Hikers may encounter small waterfalls, shallow streams and unusual rock formations. Natural freshwater makes the wadi feel notably greener than many UAE landscapes.

The mesmerising Sulphur Pools

A principal attraction is the series of naturally occurring sulphur pools. Their milky-blue appearance is linked to mineral content, and some visitors dip their feet in the water. Swimming is not recommended because of mineral concentrations and the fragile ecosystem.

Respect the pools: do not use soap or lotions in the water, and avoid disturbing their ecosystem. Their natural beauty depends on responsible visitors.

Wildlife and scenery

Water supports a micro-ecosystem of birds, small reptiles and, at times, mountain goats. Acacia trees, date palms and wild shrubs contribute to the fertile wadi landscape. Birdwatchers may spot eagles, falcons and partridges, while freshwater attracts insects and amphibians.

Planning your hike

  • Best time: October to April, when temperatures are cooler. Summer hiking can be strenuous and dangerous.
  • Bring: Sturdy shoes, 2–3 litres of water per person, snacks, a first-aid kit, sun protection and optionally a walking stick.
  • Navigation: Carry GPS or a downloaded route map because reception can be limited. Wikiloc or Google Maps can help.
  • Safety: Beginners may benefit from a guided hike. Tell someone your plan and check weather before leaving.
  • Respect nature: Carry out all rubbish and avoid disturbing wildlife or plants.

Explore responsibly

Wadi Al Dahir is an appealing escape from urban life, bringing together mineral pools, mountain views and lush pockets of greenery. With preparation and care for the landscape, it offers a distinctive way to experience Fujairah’s natural side.
