  • Duration: roughly 3 hours for the return route, or 7 hours for the round trip including stops.

A gentle Hajar Mountain introduction

Wadi Nehaila is an easy walk at the base of the Hajar Mountains. It is a good choice when you want mountain scenery without committing to a long, steep climb. The route follows the bends of the wadi and rewards a relaxed pace with views of dry-stone walls, rocky slopes and a large cluster of old stone houses before the dam.

The landscape feels open and historical rather than technical. You may encounter rough ground and loose stones, but the route is forgiving if you choose the higher path. The lower wadi route is more adventurous and includes frequent boulder hopping, which is enjoyable for confident walkers but can be slower on the return.

Choose the route that suits your group

The 6 km return walk is the better choice for first-time visitors, families with confident walkers and anyone looking for an easy half-day outing. Reach the village and the stated turnaround point, then retrace your route. Returning the same way makes navigation straightforward and lets you enjoy the scenery without rushing.

The 15 km round trip is a longer, moderate day walk. Allow a full day, start early and use an offline map. If you stay in the wadi bed, expect more uneven boulders; the path above is flatter but still requires attention to your orientation and footing.

Check list

Carry enough supplies for the route you choose. Two litres is a starting minimum for the short walk; take more for the long circuit, hot days or slower groups.

  • Hiking shoes or runners with reliable grip
  • At least 2 litres of water per person
  • Food, snacks and chocolates; a soft drink can help with low energy
  • GPS, map or smartphone with offline maps downloaded
  • Battery pack for phones and navigation devices
  • Backpack, torch or headlamp, and a small knife or multitool
  • Personal medication and a basic first-aid kit
  • Hat, sun protection and suitable layers for changing temperatures

Explore respectfully

The old village is a fine place to pause and look closely at the stone construction, dry walls and the way people historically used the mountain foothills. It may look abandoned, but shepherds or local people may still use parts of the area. Do not enter homes, climb fragile walls, leave markings or disturb animals. Keep your visit quiet and take only photographs.

Safety and wadi etiquette

Check the weather forecast and do not enter a wadi when rain, thunderstorms or flash-flood risk is forecast anywhere in the catchment. Even a distant storm can send water rapidly through a dry-looking channel. Turn back if conditions change.

Walk with a group where possible, tell someone your plans, stay hydrated and give yourself enough daylight to return. Keep to existing paths where practical, carry all litter out and show consideration around farms and grazing animals.
