Gastropods are members of the class Gastropoda, the largest and most diverse group within the phylum Mollusca. The class includes the familiar snails and slugs, together with an extraordinary variety of marine, freshwater and terrestrial species.
More than 60,000 living species have been described, and estimates often rise above 65,000 depending on the classification and source used.
The name Gastropoda
The word comes from Greek roots meaning “stomach” and “foot.” It refers to the broad muscular foot positioned beneath the main body.
What is a gastropod?
Gastropods are soft-bodied invertebrates. Most have a distinct head, sensory tentacles, a muscular foot and a mantle that produces the shell when an external shell is present.
They are molluscs, which means they are related to bivalves, octopuses, squid, cuttlefish and chitons. Gastropods are by far the largest mollusc group and account for most living mollusc diversity.
A garden snail, a desert snail and a brightly coloured sea slug are all members of the same remarkable class.
Snails and slugs
The class is commonly divided in everyday language into snails and slugs. Snails usually have an external shell large enough for much or all of the animal to withdraw into it.
Slugs are gastropods whose shell has been greatly reduced, moved inside the body or lost during evolution. Some slugs still retain a small internal shell beneath the mantle, while others have only a tiny remnant or no shell at all.
“Slug” is therefore not one single evolutionary branch. Shell reduction evolved independently in several different gastropod groups.

The gastropod shell
A typical snail shell is a single shell, often spirally coiled. It is secreted by the mantle and grows as the animal grows.
The shell is made mainly from calcium carbonate combined with an organic protein framework. New material is added at the shell opening, gradually increasing its size.
Shell shape varies enormously. Some are tall and pointed, others flat, rounded, cap-shaped or elongated. In fossil specimens, the original shell may remain, dissolve away or be replaced by minerals.
Internal moulds
When sediment fills a shell and later hardens, the shell may dissolve and leave an internal mould. This can preserve the overall spiral shape without the original shell material.
How gastropods move
Gastropods move using a broad muscular foot. Waves of contraction pass along the foot and push the animal forward.
Many species produce mucus that reduces friction, helps them grip surfaces and protects the soft body. The familiar shiny trail left by a land snail or slug is a residue of this mucus.
Marine gastropods may crawl over rock, coral, sand, mud or seaweed. Some specialised species burrow, swim or drift in open water.
How gastropods feed
Most gastropods possess a radula, a ribbon-like feeding structure covered with rows of tiny teeth.
The radula works rather like a microscopic rasp. Herbivorous species may scrape algae from rocks or graze plant material, while predators use modified teeth to cut, drill or capture prey.
Gastropod diets are extremely varied. Members of the group may be:

Where gastropods live
Gastropods occupy a wider range of environments than any other mollusc class. They are found from the deep ocean to mountain slopes and from freshwater streams to arid deserts.
Marine species account for much of the diversity, but gastropods have also successfully colonised freshwater and land.
Terrestrial species must prevent water loss, so many remain active at night, after rain or in shaded and humid places. Desert snails may seal themselves inside their shells and remain inactive through long dry periods.

An enormous diversity
Gastropods vary from microscopic species to large marine snails weighing several kilograms. Some have plain brown shells, while others display elaborate spines, bright colours or complex patterns.
Sea slugs include nudibranchs, famous for vivid colours and exposed gills. Some species obtain defensive chemicals from their food, while others can retain stinging cells taken from prey.
The figure of 65,000 species is a useful general estimate, but the exact number changes as new species are described and classifications are revised.
Gastropods in the fossil record
Gastropods have an ancient fossil record extending back into the Cambrian Period, more than 500 million years ago.
Their mineralised shells fossilise more readily than soft tissues. Fossil gastropods may preserve complete coiled shells, fragments, impressions, internal moulds or cross-sections through limestone.
Fossil shells help geologists reconstruct former environments. Marine gastropods indicate seawater, while freshwater or land species point to different habitats.
Not every spiral is a gastropod
Ammonites, nautiloids and some other fossils also have coiled shells. Reliable identification depends on shell structure, symmetry, chambers and the surrounding rock.
Gastropods in UAE rocks
Marine gastropod fossils can be found in some sedimentary rocks of the UAE, including fossil-bearing outcrops around Mleiha and other parts of the Hajar foothills.
These animals lived in ancient seas long before the modern desert landscape developed. Their shells became buried in marine sediment, which later hardened into limestone and was exposed by uplift and erosion.
At sites such as Fossil Rock, the visible fossils may appear as spirals, curved moulds or shell-shaped cavities in the rock.
Leave fossils in place
Do not hammer, carve or remove fossil shells. Their position in the rock is part of the geological record, and accessible sites can be quickly damaged by repeated collecting.
How to observe gastropods responsibly
Living gastropods should be handled as little as possible. Their soft bodies lose moisture easily, and shells can crack under pressure.
Fossil gastropods are best photographed where they occur. Use a ruler or another familiar object for scale and take images from several angles.
- Observe living snails without removing them from their habitat.
- Do not touch brightly coloured marine slugs.
- Never taste an unidentified snail or slug.
- Do not break fossil-bearing rock.
- Photograph fossils with a scale.
- Record the surrounding rock and location privately.
Final thoughts
Gastropods are far more than ordinary garden snails. They form an immense animal group that has adapted to oceans, rivers, forests, deserts and mountains.
Their shells preserve an especially rich fossil record, allowing hikers in the UAE to encounter evidence of marine life in rocks now surrounded by desert.
