The majestic Hajar Mountains take their name from the Arabic word hajar, meaning stone. The range begins in the Musandam Peninsula of northern Oman, crosses the eastern UAE and continues south-east through Oman.
Depending on how the range is measured, it is commonly described as approximately 500 to 600 kilometres long. For much of its course it runs roughly parallel to the coast, before becoming broader and extending farther inland in central Oman.
One range, several landscapes
The Hajar Mountains include the dramatic limestone peaks of Musandam, the rugged mountains of Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, and the broad high massifs of northern Oman.
A mountain range made of stone
At first sight, the name seems perfectly chosen. The mountains are dominated by exposed rock, steep ridges, dry wadis and cliffs that rise abruptly from desert plains and coastal settlements.
Yet the Hajar Mountains are not geologically uniform. Limestone and dolomite dominate some areas, while other sections expose volcanic rocks, deep-sea sediments and fragments of ancient oceanic crust and mantle.
The Hajar Mountains are not simply a wall of rock. They are a geological cross-section through an ancient ocean and a long history of mountain building.
From Musandam into Oman
The range begins in the north at the Musandam Peninsula, separated from the main part of Oman by UAE territory. From there, the mountains extend through and alongside the eastern Emirates before continuing into northern Oman.
In the UAE, the Hajar landscape is especially prominent in Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and parts of Sharjah. Farther south in Oman, the mountain belt broadens and includes major highland areas such as Jabal Akhdar and Jabal Shams.
Ru'us Al Jibal: the heads of the mountains
The northern Musandam section is known as Ru'us Al Jibal, meaning “the heads of the mountains.”
Here, great limestone ridges rise sharply above the Strait of Hormuz. In many coastal locations, the slopes drop almost directly into the sea, creating the dramatic cliffs, inlets and fjord-like khors for which Musandam is famous.
The terrain is deeply dissected and often difficult to cross. Old village paths, stone stairways and donkey trails reveal how mountain communities once moved between settlements, farms and the coast.
Jabal Akhdar and Jabal Shams
The highest part of the Hajar system lies in Oman's Western Hajar Mountains, within the broad Jabal Akhdar massif.
Jabal Akhdar means “Green Mountain.” The name reflects the cooler highland climate, terraced agriculture and vegetation found at elevation rather than a continuously green landscape.
Jabal Shams—“Mountain of the Sun”—is generally recognised as the highest mountain in Oman and the Hajar range. Official and widely used references commonly give its elevation as approximately 3,009 metres.
Why older sources may say 2,980 m
Mountain elevations differ between older maps, survey methods and the precise point being measured. Modern references most commonly list Jabal Shams at about 3,009 metres.
A harsh but rewarding landscape
The rugged terrain can appear inhospitable. Water is scarce, shade is limited, routes are often unmarked and loose rock can make even a short distance demanding.
In summer, temperatures and sun exposure make many routes impractical or unsafe for ordinary recreational hiking. Flash floods can also transform a dry wadi into a dangerous channel with little warning.
During the cooler season, well-prepared hikers can experience a remarkable landscape of ridges, canyons, abandoned-looking settlements, terraces, geological exposures and long views across desert and sea.

What are ophiolites?
Ophiolites are one of the most remarkable geological features of the Hajar Mountains.
An ophiolite is not one single rock type. It is a sequence of rocks that represents part of ancient oceanic lithosphere—including oceanic crust and upper mantle—later transported and exposed on land.
A typical ophiolite sequence may contain deep mantle peridotite, layered gabbro, sheeted dykes, basaltic lava and marine sediments.
These rocks did not simply rise vertically from deep inside the Earth. They were formed in an oceanic tectonic environment and later thrust, or obducted, onto the edge of the Arabian continental plate during complex plate movements.
Ocean floor above sea level
Ophiolites allow geologists to examine rocks similar to those beneath the oceans without drilling through kilometres of seawater and seafloor.
The Samail ophiolite
The great ophiolite belt of Oman and the UAE is usually called the Samail, Semail or Oman–UAE ophiolite.
It extends for hundreds of kilometres through the mountain belt, from the UAE–Oman region south-eastward across northern Oman. Scientific studies describe it as the largest, best exposed and among the best preserved ophiolite complexes on Earth.
In places, it preserves an exceptionally complete section from upper-mantle peridotites through the oceanic crust to volcanic rocks and sediments.
Why geologists study the Hajar ophiolites
The Samail ophiolite has played a major role in scientific understanding of oceanic crust, mantle processes, plate tectonics and the formation of rocks at ancient spreading centres and subduction zones.
Because the sequence is so extensive and well exposed, researchers can walk across rock units that would normally lie several kilometres beneath an ocean basin.
Studies of the ophiolite help scientists investigate:
