Discover hiking in the UAE
The UAE has an impressive variety of hikes: quiet desert walks, green spring wadis, historic villages, mountain passes and technical canyons. This page groups the hikes covered on DubaiHiking.org into six practical levels, from Level 0 through Level 5. Routes beyond Level 5 are intentionally not covered because they are generally outside the scope of a normal independent hiking plan.
These grades are a guide, not a guarantee. Areas often contain several routes, and a location is generally grouped according to its most demanding commonly described route. That means an easier route may exist nearby, while a different line in the same area can be substantially more difficult. Read the individual guide carefully, check the latest conditions and choose for the least experienced person in your group.
Level 0: a walk in the park
Level 0 is about relaxed outdoor time: safe, comfortable places for a family evening, small children and anyone who wants to enjoy nature without trail challenges.
- Al Qudra Lakes
- Al Wathba Wildlife Reserve
- Mushrif Park, Dubai
Level 1: easy introductory hikes
These routes are suitable for new hikers with basic fitness, good shoes, water and a little route awareness. They may still have uneven ground, so do not treat them as city walks.
Level 2: steady hiking and rougher terrain
Level 2 routes normally involve longer distances, boulder hopping, route-finding or more sustained sun exposure. Start early and carry enough water for a full day out.
- Wadi Showka – Dam & Pools
- Wadi Wurayah
- Copper Hike
- Donkey Path Hike
- Baqal Village
- Spectrum / Rainbow Valley
- Tower Bih
- Sulphur Pools Trail – Wadi Al Dahir
Level 3: demanding mountain days
Level 3 is for hikers with dependable fitness and confidence on loose rock, steep climbs and long days. Expect significant elevation gain, uneven descents and sections where navigation is important.
Level 4: advanced routes
Level 4 hikes require advanced mountain experience, strong route-finding, confident scrambling and a conservative approach to conditions. Go with a capable group and be ready to turn around.
Level 5: technical mountain objectives
These are among the most difficult routes covered in the UAE. Never do them alone or without experienced partners. They can require sustained bouldering, rappelling, climbing, technical equipment and self-rescue competence.
Choose your hike safely
Before every trip, confirm access, weather and the group’s ability. Carry water, sun protection, nutrition, offline maps, a charged phone and a first-aid kit. Wadis can flood rapidly after rain, including when rain falls away from your starting point; do not enter a wadi under a rain or flash-flood warning.
Respect local communities, farms, wildlife and historic structures. Pack out every item you bring in. The level system helps you choose an adventure, but good judgement is what makes it a safe and enjoyable one.
