Maps and Routes

Maps. Great subject. There is an unconfirmed rumor about the existence of military British maps. If they exist, people who own them refuse to share. There is however good old Google Earth which is a fantastic help. Maybe its time to enter the 21st century and change compass for a basic GPS ?

Abandoned Settlements?

Tribes leaving their ancestral villages keep a few Afghani or Pakistani shepherds on their fields. Tending goats and keeping their villages maintained. It’s eerie to hike through these near empty and abandoned villages but it`s part of the tribal life. Move to the coastal towns and enjoy electricity, schools, TV, cars and all modern comfort.

Needless to say that you should use common sense. Don’t destroy dwellings, butcher goats for a BBQ, mark local settlements with graffiti etc.

Respect settlements and archaeological sites at all times. Houses and farms may look deserted at first sight but lots of them are not! Trunks with tools, locked storage houses, water containers and other items are obvious signs of human presence and should be respected.
